My Wonderful Heritage Community,

As we begin this new school year I wanted to take a moment and welcome you all back to Heritage Elementary whether you are a hybrid learner or an e-Learner.  In all my 31 years of education this has certainly been a different beginning to our school year.  I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it was to have students back in the building last week for orientation.  Having the full cohorts here on Monday and Tuesday was pretty exciting for our staff and students.  Your students are doing an amazing job of keeping their masks on, social distancing and consistently washing hands and sanitizing.  Our teachers are working hard to help our students remain safe and healthy here at Heritage.  Our goal is always to provide a safe environment for students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.   We will take all of the precautions we can to protect our staff and students while providing essential learning opportunities for your precious children.

As we all are trying to navigate our new normal, we know keeping track of multiple schedules with multiple kids can be challenging.  Our intent in sending home remote day schedules/frameworks are to establish normal routines for your children on their remote days.  Please know these are just a framework and can be adjusted to meet the needs of each family.  You may have also noticed that some teachers are inviting your students to join in on morning meetings, math lessons and read alouds on the days they are home.  With our new enVision math program and this hybrid model, we want to ensure that our students are completing a year of math instruction so the math lessons on remote days are essential for your students to join.

I want to thank you as a community for your encouragement, support and trust as we figure our way through both our hybrid model and eLearning together. I appreciate your patience as we are figuring out all of our new protocols in our building and getting eLearning ready.  As you all are aware, we will not be able to have any volunteers or visitors in our building to ensure the safety of our students and staff.  We have a “drop and dash” table in our front entry for items that need to be given to your students during the day.  We have a wonderful system in our lunchroom where students only sit with their class/cohort and are at a safe distance from one another.  Having students enter the building at three separate doors has worked great in the morning and after school as well.   We will continue to monitor the systems we have in place and make adjustments if needed.

A reminder that our eLearning students will not begin school until Monday, August 31st.  Thank you for your patience as the district figures out all the needed support for this eLearning platform. You should all receive something from your eLearning teacher today or tomorrow, and I believe your student will have a virtual orientation on Friday.  I know it will be a wonderful learning opportunity for your students.  We are here to support you and are hoping that your first week of elearning will be a great success! We are fortunate to have Alisa Tolson as a district support for eLearning.  Her email is amtolson@dcsdk12.org should you need to reach out to her with any questions or concerns.

As always, I am here for you should you have any questions or concerns.  Thank you for sharing your students with us; we promise to take good care of them.

Warmly,

Jean Wolach
